Balloon Valvotomy in Delhi

A narrowed heart valve does not always mean open-heart surgery. In many people, a balloon Valvotomy can open the valve from inside using a thin tube and a small balloon, with no cut on the chest. If you are looking for a balloon valvotomy in Delhi, this page explains what the procedure is, which valve problems it treats, how doctors decide who is suitable, what happens on the day, and how recovery goes.

Dr. Dinesh Kumar Mittal, Senior Director & Head, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, specialises in narrowed heart valves, including balloon valvotomy. AIIMS-trained, with 25+ years in adult, paediatric and neonatal cardiac surgery, he checks your tests and valves to see if a balloon valvotomy suits you. First, here is what a balloon valvotomy does.

What Is Balloon Valvotomy?

Balloon valvotomy (also called balloon valvuloplasty) is a procedure where a doctor widens a stiff, narrowed heart valve by inflating a small balloon inside it.

A heart valve works like a door. It opens to let blood move through and closes to stop it from flowing back.

The heart has four valves: mitral, tricuspid, aortic and pulmonary.

  • Mitral valve: between the upper and lower left chambers of the heart.

  • Tricuspid valve: between the upper and lower right chambers.

  • Pulmonary valve: sends blood from the heart to the lungs.

  • Aortic valve: sends blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

If the flaps of the valve start sticking together at the edges, this door cannot open properly. This is called valve stenosis. The heart has to push harder to get blood through, and it becomes strained.

In balloon valvotomy, a thin tube called a catheter is passed through a vein in the groin and guided to the heart. A deflated balloon sits at its tip. Once it is across the narrowed valve, it is inflated for a short time. The pressure pulls the stuck edges apart, and blood flows more easily.

Balloon Valvotomy Types

There are three types of balloon valvotomy: mitral, pulmonary and aortic. The type depends on which valve is narrowed.

Balloon Mitral Valvotomy

Balloon Mitral Valvotomy opens a narrowed mitral valve (mitral stenosis) and is the most common valvotomy in adults.

  • Cause: Rheumatic fever in childhood can scar the valve and cause its flaps to stick together.

  • Works best: When the valve is still soft and flexible.

  • Less effective: If the valve has become hardened by calcium deposits.

Balloon Pulmonary Valvotomy

Balloon Pulmonary valvotomy treats a pulmonary valve that is narrow from birth. It is used mainly in babies and children.

Balloon Aortic Valvotomy

Balloon aortic valvotomy treats narrowed aortic valve, but it is used in selected babies and children. The suitability depends on the child’s age, size and valve shape.

Whichever valve is narrowed, the first clue is usually a change in how you feel, so the warning signs are worth knowing next.

Narrowed Heart Valve Signs

The usual signs of narrowed heart valve are breathlessness, tiredness, a racing or uneven heartbeat, cough and swollen feet. They appear because the heart struggles to push blood through a small valve opening.

  • Breathlessness: blood backs up into the lungs

  • Tiredness: less blood reaches the body

  • Uneven heartbeat: the upper chamber stretches under extra load

  • Cough: fluid builds up in the lungs

  • Swollen feet: pressure rises; fluid collects in the legs

Symptoms build slowly and are easy to mistake for ordinary tiredness, so many people adjust without noticing. Tests confirm the valve problem and show whether a balloon can help.

Valve stenosis Diagnosis

Diagnosis of a narrowed heart valve is mainly with an echocardiogram, along with a few other tests:

  • Heart sounds: A stethoscope may detect a whooshing sound (murmur) from blood passing through a tight valve.

  • Echocardiogram: Ultrasound checks valve opening, flap stiffness and strain on the heart.

  • Transoesophageal echo (TEE): Closer ultrasound through the food pipe; checks for clots before balloon treatment.

  • ECG: Records heart rhythm and detects irregular beats.

  • Chest X-ray: Shows an enlarged heart or fluid in the lungs

These results show whether the valve is still soft and flexible, and that decides who is a good candidate for a balloon.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Balloon Valvotomy?

You are a good candidate if the narrowed valve is still soft and flexible, with no clot and no major leak. Doctors check this with tests before planning the procedure:

  • Valve is narrowed enough to cause problems

  • Flaps are soft and mobile, not thick, stiff or hard with calcium

  • No clot in the heart

  • No major leak; it can become worse with procedure

  • Done at the right centre by an expert

When these conditions are not met, a balloon can be the wrong choice.

Balloon Valvotomy vs Valve Replacement

A balloon Valvotomy is not enough if the valve is hard with calcium, has a clot nearby, leaks significantly, or there is any other heart disease that needs surgery. Valve repair surgery or valve replacement is safer then.

Valve replacement

Best for

soft, flexible, narrowed valve

Hard, calcified, damaged valve

Suitable for clot or leak?

No, can move a clot or worsen the leak

Yes, treats both

Chest Cut

Yes

Recovery

Shorter

Longer

Long term effect

Valve may narrow again

Lasting; though mechanical valve needs blood thinners

No procedure is inherently better, which procedure fits a patient more depends on their age, health condition and how regularly someone can come for follow-up all matter.

Balloon Valvuloplasty Procedure

A balloon valvuloplasty procedure is done in a cath lab, usually under anaesthesia, with no cut on the chest.

Preparation
  • Blood tests, echocardiography and clotting tests confirm if the procedure is safe.

  • The patient is advised to fast for several hours before the procedure.

Vascular access

A thin catheter is inserted through a blood vessel in the groin.

Reaching the valve

The catheter is guided through the blood vessels to the narrowed heart valve.

Opening the valve

A balloon at the catheter’s tip is positioned across the valve and inflated to separate the restricted leaflets. It is then deflated and removed.

Final assessment

The doctor confirms that the valve has opened adequately and that no significant new leak has developed.

Recovery After Balloon Valvotomy

Recovery after balloon valvotomy is much shorter than after open-heart surgery. Most people stay in hospital briefly and rest for a few days.

  • At home: rest for a few days, then return to routine as the doctor advises

  • Follow-up echo: checks how well the valve is working

The follow-up echo matters as much as the procedure. A valve can narrow again, and catching it early gives you more options.

Balloon Valvotomy Cost in Delhi

The cost of balloon valvotomy in Delhi ranges from ₹1 lakh to ₹3 lakh, but these costs can vary depending on:

  • The valve being treated

  • Complexity of the case

  • Hospital and duration of stay

  • Other health conditions of the patient

A precise estimate can be given by the doctor after proper evaluation of the case.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the result of balloon valvotomy last? expand_more

Many people stay free of symptoms for years, but the valve can narrow again, so regular echo follow-up is needed.

What is the success rate of balloon valvotomy? expand_more

Balloon valvuloplasty is generally effective in relieving valve narrowing, but success rates vary depending on the valve, age and severity of the condition.

Is balloon valvotomy painful? expand_more

Usually not. Anaesthesia prevents significant pain during the procedure; mild soreness at the catheter site may occur afterwards.
